Style Modern day surrealism explores alternate realities & subconscious ideas. Many factors come into play, like dreams, individual perceptions, and modern urban life. The viewer should look at the work and find their own perception of what they see. Like a rorschag test, everyone's unique vision sees something different based on their life experiences and their observation of the art. The idea is to capture a really deep moment in time and portray it in a way that can be looked at over and over again to let the viewer find new interpretations of the moment. Images are increased in contrast and brightness to create bright, saturated colors and reinforce the idea of an alternate reality. Real but not real.
Method The work uses structure at the same time that it pursues a reckless abandonment of structure, allowing the two ideas to push and pull on each other, living in a state of controlled chaos or wild structure. Work done digitally strives to become organic & grungy. Work done by hand pursues crisp, clean lines & smooth textures. Many tools are used, including but not limited too: conventional & digital photography, watercolor, digital imaging, ink drawings, as well as oil pastels, colored pencil, paint, and markers. All of these elements are then combined in Photoshop to layer everything on top of eachother. Most images use many photographs to create a vision of something that can't be seen in ordinary life.
Sometimes sound and interactive mediums are used for the creation of an installation piece. To me, art is not about specific tools, it's about experimenting in the media that best fits the idea that you are portraying. I could never be just a photographer or just a painter, I would find it too boring and confining.
